What can critters tell us about our water health?

Time & Location
Apr 11, 2026, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Wisconsin Energy Institute, Wisconsin Energy Institute, 1552 University Ave, Madison, WI 53726, USA
About the event
Upper Sugar will be joining scientists and advocacy groups for this all-campus weekend of free exploration and fun!
We will have preserved or live specimens (success of live collection of specimens is variable) of freshwater macroinvertebrates that participants can learn to identify. Using an identification key outlining which invertebrates can persist in certain levels of water pollutants, participants will be able to estimate the health of the water where the invertebrates were collected. This will relate to how water health relates to the health of the whole water community. We will also tie in how aquatic invasive species can impact the water system as well.
Event family friendly and open to the public. More information about this event: https://science.wisc.edu/science-expeditions/
